Winter Mountain

Session One Select an 11" x 14" canvas. Step 1: Mark horizon/water line 3.5" above bottom edge of canvas in pencil with ruler. Step 2: Apply white gesso above horizon/water line. Step 3: Mix Alizarin Crimson and Yellow Ochre. Apply criss-cross strokes to sky area. As you work downward, apply Alizarin Crimson, Yellow Ochre, and Dark Sienna. Step 4: Use corner of brush to make circular strokes for cloud shapes. Step 5: Blend sky area to soften lines. Step 6: Mix Mars Black, Alizarin Crimson, Dark Sienna, and small amount of Phthalo Blue. Load palette knife with thin line of this dark mountain mixture. With firm pressure shape top edge of mountain.  Step 7: Use brush to pull down dark mixture to paint base of mountain. Let dry. Step 8: Apply clear or white medium to mountain area. Step 9: Use palette knife to apply snow to right side of peaks. Snow is made with Titanium White and Yellow Ochre.  Create shadows on left sides of peaks with mixture o

Bird Nest

Step One: Cover canvas with thin coat of acrylic gesso. Step Two: Place directional hatch strokes to shape nest with Yellow Ochre. Nest is oval shaped. Step Three: Add strokes of Burnt Sienna following directional strokes already placed. These strokes are the spaces between the sticks. They can be larger than the Yellow Ochre strokes. Step Four: Block in three eggs with Cobalt Blue and Titanium White. Only part of the front two eggs shows at front of nest. Step Five: Add small amount of Mars Black to Burnt Sienna. Use hatch marks to place deep shadows which are the deepest recesses of the nest. Step Six: Fill in background with mixture of Cobalt Blue and Unbleached Titanium. Step Seven: Use dark shadow color to block in tree branches under nest. Step Eight: Continue to develop the illusion of layered sticks with (1) mixture of Yellow Ochre and Unbleached Titanium (2)Burnt Sienna and (3) Burnt Sienna/Mars Black mixture. Step Nine: Sign your painting. Well done!

Creating Texture with Layering: Old Boat 1. Pencil trace the boat and horizon line lightly. Boat should not be centered on canvas. 2.Tone canvas with a thin layer of Unbleached Titanium. Let dry. 3. Sketch horizon and boat with Yellow Ochre. 4. Add shadow of boat to sand. Size of shadow must be smaller than size of boat. 5. Create layer of rust and damaged wood on boat. First use Yellow Ochre and follow with Burnt Sienna. Create warm undertone for boat shadow with Burnt Sienna. 6. Using dry brush begin to apply layers to surface of boat. Use Cobalt Blue for rim of boat. Use mixture of Unbleached Titanium, Cobalt Blue, and Mars Black for side of boat. Build color slowly and allow rust/weathering to show through. 7. Add details to strip of wood that is in sun on top of boat with mixture of Cobalt Blue and Titanium White.  8. Keep adding details with layers of paint. 9.Use Mars Black to create shadow under boat.
